This is for contest, he wanted us to draw a picture of us conquering our fear in some way. I know, some of ya'll are like,"Of course the black chick would draw herself ripping the KKK a new one!" but, this image represents more than that. I wanted to create an image of myself conquering my fear that also represented my sensibility as an artist. At first I wanted to do an all-out dramatic picture of myself battling these fears, but then I settled on a simpler image. My fear is the intolerance and prejudice that I have experienced as a human being, a woman, a black woman, a black woman who draws in the Golden Age style, a young black woman trying to find her place in this crazy world. I'm scared of being treated like a kid who doesn't know anything or who can't make anything positive of herself simply because of the color of her skin or the way she wields a pencil. That little Klansman represents all of that intolerance and selfishness that I and may others have faced, so I turned the tables by making him small, dorky, and unaware of me setting his foot(and eventually his outfit) on fire Vaudeville style off screen.
